Sigma FP2 Mirrorless Camera

Overview

The Sigma FP2 Mirrorless Camera carries on the fp series idea of a pocketable full-frame camera, now with a 24.5MP partially stacked sensor, a tilting touchscreen and far more video power. It weighs about 460 g with battery and card, is dust and splash resistant, and a single switch on top flips it between Still and Cine modes, each with its own interface and workflow.

In Cine mode it records 6K Open Gate ProRes RAW HQ and L-Log, and stills are saved as 14-bit DNG or JPEG at up to 20 fps. Autofocus follows people, animals and birds, 13 colour modes give ready-made looks, 70GB of internal storage backs up the SD slot, and a battery good for about 370 shots keeps it going. Optional EVF-21 and LVF-21 viewfinders and an HU-21 Hot Shoe unit extend the system.

Partially-Stacked 24.5MP Sensor

The 35.9 x 23.9mm full-frame CMOS sensor reads out quickly, which reduces rolling shutter distortion and allows high frame-rate recording. It works with a new ASIC image processor that Sigma says is 15% faster than the one in the BF, and low-light performance is improved too. Native ISO runs from 100 to 102,400 (6 extended), with dual base ISOs of 320 and 2500, and a 1.5x crop mode adds reach.

Dual Still-Cine Workflow

A switch on top of the body changes between Still and Cine modes, so the camera behaves like a stills camera or a cinema camera as needed. Each mode has its own menus and controls, and settings do not get in each other's way. The result is a small camera that suits a photographer in the morning and a filmmaker in the afternoon, with an electronic shutter from 1/25600 to 30 seconds and Bulb up to 5 minutes.

6K Open Gate Cine Recording

• 6K Open Gate (6048 x 3404) ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ at 12-bit, up to 29.97 fps
• H.264 and H.265 recording, L-Log with up to 14.1 stops of dynamic range (4K full-frame L-Log)
• Open Gate footage covers horizontal and vertical video from one shoot, cropped in post
• Director's Viewfinder simulates the framing of other cinema cameras and supports desqueeze display
• Interval timer video output in 4K or 2K (H.265, 16:9 only) at 24, 25, 29.97, 48, 50 and 59.94 fps
• 32-bit float audio with the HU-21 and specified Panasonic accessories, plus a stereo built-in microphone

Tracking AF & Fast Bursts

Autofocus is faster and more accurate than before, with subject detection for people, animals and, using a neural-network system, birds, so focus stays on the subject without placing points by hand. For stills the camera fires up to about 20 fps for bursts of up to 200 frames, and it offers evaluative and spot metering, ±5 EV compensation and a 2 or 10-second self-timer.

13 Colour Modes

A dedicated Colour button gives quick access to thirteen presets built on Sigma's colour science: Standard, Rich, Calm, Powder Blue, Warm Gold, Teal and Orange, FOV Classic Blue, FOV Classic Yellow, Forest Green, Sunset Red, Cinema, 709 Look and Monochrome. Rich, Calm and 709 Look are new to the FP2, and Monochrome offers ten toning effects.

Tilting Touchscreen

The 3.15-inch touchscreen has about 2.1 million dots and tilts up by 90° and down by 45°, which helps with low-angle tracking shots, overhead compositions and cramped spaces. Its structure also helps dissipate heat during long recordings, a useful detail in a body this small.
