Overview

The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Express HD is a compact capture and playback box that connects SDI and analogue component video gear to a Mac or PC over Thunderbolt 4. It records into your editing or grading software and plays back out to SDI and HDMI, so older broadcast equipment and modern post-production workflows can share one interface.

It handles SD and HD video up to 1080p60 with as many as 16 channels of embedded audio, and adds analogue audio inputs, a reference input and an RS-422 port for controlling broadcast decks. It suits editors, colourists and broadcast facilities digitising tape or feeding a display from their timeline, and it runs from Thunderbolt bus power with no separate adapter.

Real-Time Processing

  • Hardware colour space conversion happens in real time
  • 10-bit hardware down conversion on the SDI B output for HD playback
  • Choose letterbox, anamorphic 16:9 or centre-cut 4:3 for converted pictures
  • Real-time effects playback in Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve

Control & Power

The front-panel DIP switches and the rear RS-422 deck control port both let you manage the unit from software. A Teranex Mini Smart Panel, sold separately, can also control it and adds a 2.2" display for confidence monitoring. Power comes through the Thunderbolt 4 connection, which supports up to 40 Gb/s, so there is no power supply to carry.

Software Support

  • DaVinci Resolve and Fusion from Blackmagic Design
  • Final Cut Pro from Apple
  • Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop from Adobe
  • Media Composer and Pro Tools from Avid
  • Cubase and Nuendo from Steinberg
  • More titles are listed on the Blackmagic Design website
